Last year, SPAN announced a collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric Trane (METUS), a leading supplier of all-climate heat pumps. Today, we’re excited to announce that SPAN’s integration with Mitsubishi Electric Trane (METUS) variable speed heat pumps is officially available.

Forty-two percent of U.S. energy-related carbon emissions come from our homes and the cars we drive. With funding available through the IRA and related programs, we have a unique opportunity to cut both emissions and utility bills by deploying best-in-class technologies like heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, solar panels, home batteries, and EV chargers.

But there’s a problem. As many as 48 million (55%) single-family homes in the U.S. do not have adequate electrical capacity to transition away from fossil fuels.1 And the infrastructure that brings power to these homes is also undersized. Building our way out of this is wildly expensive. For example, California would need around $50bn in additional distribution investment to support cost-saving electric appliances and vehicles.2

SPAN PowerUpTM technology, which ships with every SPAN Panel, avoids these costly upgrades and enables electrification with the wires we already have. PowerUp intelligently manages appliances in the home to more efficiently utilize existing electrical capacity and deliver a best-in-class experience for homeowners.

This integration extends the same variable control relationship we have with SPAN Drive to Mitsubishi’s market-leading heat pumps. SPAN gracefully ramps compressor speed up and down to avoid costly electrical upgrades3 while continuing to deliver the exceptional performance and comfort Mitsubishi is known for.

This integration not only bypasses upgrade friction when you install your new Mitsubishi heat pump; it also frees up capacity for other electric appliances like EV chargers and induction ranges. By intelligently managing extreme HVAC peak loads on hot and cold days, there’s more power available for the rest of your electrified life. If you need a new electrical panel for your Mitsubishi heat pump (which is often the case) - whether or not you’re blocked by a utility service upgrade - SPAN lays a powerful electrical foundation for the home that streamlines the addition of other electric appliances down the road.

If you’re building a new home or deep-retrofitting an existing home, SPAN and Mitsubishi can reduce the cost to build by better utilizing electrical service. You can avoid the uncertain costs and delays of bringing larger service to the home and deliver homeowners the best-in-class comfort and unparalleled control that SPAN and Mitsubishi provide.

With generous IRA incentives becoming available across the country for both SPAN and Mitsubishi, electrification has never been so accessible for homeowners across the country.

3 At launch, this unique throttling functionality will work specifically with wall-mount ductless (model GS) single-zone units. For all other Mitsubishi heat pumps, SPAN PowerUp will manage circuits according to homeowner preferences, which may include temporarily pausing the heat pump unit, until the PowerUp event has passed.
