At SPAN, we’re constantly working to empower homeowners to take control of their energy use and save money. That’s why we’re excited to introduce a new advanced savings feature - currently in beta. Now, not only can you track your home’s energy consumption in kWh, but you can also see how much each circuit is costing you in dollars.
Here’s how it works: by simply entering a few details about your utility plan – whether you’re on a flat rate or time-of-use (TOU) plan – SPAN can estimate your energy costs per circuit. If you’re on a TOU plan, you can specify your peak and off-peak rates and times. With this information, SPAN will simulate how much money you could save by shifting your appliances to consume energy during off-peak times, when rates are lower.
Don’t know your utility plan details? Log into your utility account or look at a recent utility bill to find out whether you’re on a TOU plan and what your on-peak/off-peak rates are. In general, peak windows are between the hours of 4-9pm, and off-peak rates are typically in effect overnight, when grid-consumption is relatively low. You can also check out the US Energy Information Administration’s Electricity data browser for the monthly average electricity retail rates, by state.
For example, you might find that charging your electric vehicle or running your dishwasher at night could save you a significant amount over time. Our app makes it easier than ever to make informed decisions about when to use energy to help you lower your bill.
Plus, if you own solar and/or battery, SPAN now also tells you what percent of energy each circuit drew from solar, battery, and the grid, so you have even more information to increase self-consumption of solar and decrease your on-peak grid usage.
Excited to start saving? Open the SPAN app, input your utility plan details, and see how you can take even more control of your energy costs today!
Note that this feature is an estimate and will not match your utility bill exactly. Not all TOU rate plans are supported at this time. This feature is in beta, and we’re eager to continue refining this experience for customers over time.
